To enable you to then continue knitting in the round, extra stitches are cast on after the underarm stitches have been placed on a stitch holder or waste yarn. These extra stitches are 'steeks' and are knitted in a 1x1 stripe pattern. The same method is used at the neck opening. All steek stitches are cast off at the shoulder.
